As I heaved my snowboard bag out of the trunk, onto my back, and across the Denver airport, I debated if the effort was worth it.
It's hard to pinpoint what makes Colorado's ski town Snowmass stand out.
Iconic snowboarder Shaun White retired from professional competition following the 2022 Beijing Olympics, with 3 Olympic Gold medals, 15 X Games Gold medals in snowboarding along with another five medals in skateboarding, and a slew of other accomplishments. White is without a doubt the most decorated athlete in the sport’s history. Although he’s done competing, White is far from removing himself from the snowboard world altogether. Quite the opposite, in fact – he recently launched WHITESPACE, a fashion-forward, high-end snowboard brand crafting boards, gear, and streetclothes for snowboarders across age groups.
It's not often that Marika Favé, our impish, fast-talking mountain guide, falls silent. It's a spring morning on the packed, sun-streaked gondola to the peak of the Marmolada glacier, the highest point in the Dolomites. A former national skier for Italy whose family has lived in the Fassa Valley for generations, Favé has been telling Jack, the photographer I'm traveling with, and me about the grimly determined Austro-Hungarian soldiers who dug a small city into the ice up here during the Great War. But as the gondola passes another rocky bluff and great blankets of untouched shadow-draped powder come into view, the war stories cease and a grin spreads across her face. We don't know exactly what the plan is when the gondola clanks to a halt at the Punta Rocca, a viewing platform at 10,700 feet that looks out over all of the Dolomites. But the mountain air seems charged with the palpable sense that, on this exact Thursday morning, something very good is about to happen.
Sophie Hediger, a Swiss snowboarder who competed in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, has died following an avalanche at a mountain resort in Switzerland, the country's skiing federation said on Tuesday.
I never bought into spring skiing until I flew to Aspen in March for the FIS Alpine Skiing Cup. As much as I love skiing, spring break destinations usually mean chasing the sun—not only because this East Coaster was skeptical about skiing conditions on the tail end of winter. When I arrived, though, snow was coming down steadily. The next morning? The skies had cleared, and the fresh powder was seemingly untouched—all conditions that make any ski or snowboarder want to stay out on the mountain forever.

I've had the opportunity to ski at over 20 resorts across the United States, and five of them were located in Utah.
In the early days of our relationship, my wife and I took a ski trip with another couple. My friend and I had been skiing and snowboarding our entire lives, but both of our then-girlfriends were novices.
For me, a perfect winter day is when I can only see one or two lines cut through deep powder on a ski run. It's a sign that I'm one of the few people enjoying the mountain that day.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. -- On the second day of my family's ski trip, the weather alerts started coming in: snow, up to 9 inches, was expected overnight.
On a Monday morning in early March, Reed Hastings, the billionaire co-founder and former chief executive of Netflix, clicked into the bindings on his snowboard and started off down one of the slopes at Powder Mountain, a ski area in Utah’s northeast corner. He quickly veered off the groomed trail into some well-spaced trees, and as he made turns over bumpy snow, you could hear his edges scratch against patches of ice.
Within the last decade, advancements in gear technology, a rising cost of lift tickets, and a desire to escape crowds have resulted in a boom in backcountry skiing. But as with other outdoor activities, an increase in people hitting the backcountry has resulted in a strain on our natural resources. As backcountry skiing continues to become more popular, as it inevitably will, it makes it that much more important to take care of each other and respect the land they’re recreating on.
For skiers and snowboarders, it’s hard to do better than a trip to Park City. Not just because it's home to Deer Valley and Park City Mountain, the largest ski and snowboard resort in the US with 7,300 skiable acres. Or because it’s got one of the most action-packed ski towns as well as hotels that span everything from the cozy Washington School House right by the town lift to the St. Regis Deer Valley with its new slopeside aprés spot, the Vintage Room. It’s also because of access and convenience. Park City is one of the easiest ski towns to get to from a major international airport—just a 35-minute drive from SLC and within an hour of four Salt Lake City-area ski resorts, including Alta and Snowbird—and packs a punch as a year-round destination for dining, the outdoors, and festivals, like Sundance and the Deer Valley Music Festival.
There’s nothing like scrambling along a jagged granite ridge resplendent in russet and lime-green lichen, when it should be covered in snow, to remind you that the climate crisis is in full swing. My guide, Maxant Danilo, and I are at an altitude of more than 2,500 metres in the Hautes-Alpes, but even though it’s late January, conditions on south-facing slopes such as these feel more like late spring. Our snowboards are strapped to our backpacks instead of our feet.
