The key to planning fall foliage trips and tours is nailing your timing, especially if you can sync your adventure up with peak colors. To help, the 2023 fall foliage predictor map is now live, and can take some of the guesswork out of planning your fall vacations.
The interactive tool is courtesy of SmokyMountains.com, a tourism site for the Smoky Mountain region that markets vacation rentals.
When using the fall foliage 2023 prediction map, you can toggle the slider for a week-by-week prediction that tracks the changing colors. The map of the United States shows when areas are expected to have the most vibrant colors. The color key ranges from “no change” to “past peak,” with patchy, partial, near peak, and peak colors in between on the county-by-county map.
The fall foliage 2023 prediction map tracks color changes from Sept. 4, when there’s a little bit of color starting to take to trees mostly in Northern parts of the country, through Nov. 20, when trees throughout the country have mostly shed their leaves and are preparing for winter.
Peak fall foliage depends on where you are in the country.
The scientists behind the fall foliage predictor feed an algorithm with more than 50,000 data points that includes historical temperatures, historical precipitation, forecast temperatures, and forecast precipitation from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Their map also takes historical leaf peak trends into consideration. While they caution that no tool can be 100 percent accurate, the map “is meant to help travelers better time their trips to have the best opportunity of catching peak color each year.” To improve accuracy, the team started doing mid-season fall foliage updates.
Peak fall foliage New England, for example, is predicted to begin Oct. 2, 2023.
Traveling to Stowe, known as the “Fall Color Capital?” Peak Vermont fall foliage 2023, specifically, is predicted to begin Oct. 2, 2023, with the entire state ablaze with peak colors by Oct. 9.
The fall foliage season really starts to kick off in the next few weeks.
According to the map, near-peak patches of color will start showing up in Utah, Colorado, and the northern parts of Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Minnesota as well as spots in New England by Sept. 25.
