Where to stay in Kuala Lumpur

Kaula Lumpur – or KL as it’s widely known – is a fantastic mish-mash of grand late-nineteenth-century buildings, glassy skyscrapers and boisterous markets. From its ethnic enclaves (this is a melting pot of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures) to its tantalizing cuisine, there’s much to see in this vibrant city – and as many places to bed down. Here’s our guide to where to stay in Kuala Lumpur.

Where to Shop, Sip, and Get Inspired in New York City, According to a Creative Director at Tiffany & Co.

“When I was 14, my parents let me take the train to the city by myself for modeling jobs. By contrast, I get anxiety when I send my daughter alone to Starbucks, so I’m constantly amazed at the liberties I enjoyed at her age. I grew up in Connecticut, outside the city, so there were the obligatory trips to see Broadway shows, and always The Nutcracker during the holidays—they were practically state visits. By the time I moved here at 21, I was more familiar with the city than some of my new friends who had grown up on the Upper East Side.”

Recreating Bob Dylan’s New York City for A Complete Unknown

In A Complete Unknown, the history is the thing. And because of that, so are the locations. The new film charts Bob Dylan’s early career, from his arrival in Greenwich Village’s folk music scene in 1961 to his 1965 show at the Newport Folk Festival. His first-ever with electric instruments—not exactly what he was known for at the time—the performance was booed by the strictest of the folk fans in the audience and came to represent the end of an era. Never mind that electric instruments were already omnipresent at Newport Folk—Bob shouldn't partake.

These Airports Offer Free City Tours During Long Layovers

When weighing the merits of a long layover at a seemingly out-of-the-way airport (say, 18 hours at Istanbul’s Atatürk when you’re flying from Washington, D.C. to Bordeaux), consider whether it offers a free layover tour for in-transit passengers. Major hubs in Asia and the Middle East now provide connecting travelers with a glimpse of the city beyond the airport, on free tours that are easily booked on arrival or reserved in advance. The well-run programs are so robust, it’s like getting a mini-vacation tacked onto your real vacation.

My Favorite Airbnb: A Boston Yacht Named Carpe Diem

While Boston wasn’t the first place my parents arrived to in the United States, I’ve always thought of the city as the start of our lives in this country. It’s where my dad got his degree, where my brother and I were born, and where my mom advanced her English beyond the canned simulacra of ESL textbooks—in Chinatown restaurant booths and in conversations with other grad student couples. Boston still feels like a starting point of sorts for us, and I was excited to visit once again from my current home in New York.

How I Travel: Ronny Chieng First Flew Business Class by Mistake

In the new Hulu show Interior Chinatown, a background actor trapped playing different cliched Asian characters on a police procedural gets involved in Chinatown’s crime scene. Comedian Ronny Chieng, who co-stars on the show, based on the much-lauded book of the same name, is a bit of a connoisseur of Chinatown neighborhoods around the world, having lived in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and now the United States. “It’s pretty funny, because the idea of Chinatown is basically in a non-Asian country, right? But the best Chinatowns are probably in Malaysia or Singapore,” says Chieng, who remains a senior correspondent on The Daily Show. “But damn, I’m biased. I have to go with New York City. It's my Chinatown and I think it's the best Chinatown. It's got food, tailors, massage places, coffee. New York City’s Chinatown is where it's at.”

Honolulu's Chinatown Is the Creative Heart of Urban Hawaii

In one 15-square-block swath of this metropolis on the Pacific, you can catch exhibits from cutting-edge contemporary artists, have dinner at one of the country's best Vietnamese restaurants, browse rare books and prints, or shop for one-of-a-kind housewares, fashion, and ephemera at effortlessly cool vintage boutiques—all against a cinematic backdrop of midcentury architecture that feels frozen in time. The neighborhood isn't in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle, though. It's Honolulu's Chinatown, about five miles west of tourist-saturated Waikiki, near the courthouses and government buildings of downtown.

The 10 Best Wine Bars in New York City

There’s a refreshing fluidity and freeness to the best wine bars of New York City, which can appear in many forms—a sleek power-lunch hotspot, a cozy bar on the Lower East Side, or a tranquil backyard in Brooklyn. “To me, a wine bar serves limited food and is more focused on the beverage at hand,” explains Chase Sinzer, owner of wine bar Claud and Penny in the East Village. “It might feel more ‘casual’ in that it invites guests to maybe peruse the bottles on the wall or pour their own wine from an ice bucket.”
