13 things to know before going to Copenhagen: get a local's perspective

I was born and bred in Copenhagen, and have lived here for most of my life (apart from some years spent in Berlin and New York City). This is my home and I could navigate the city with my eyes closed.

The drive of design

Humans have always traveled and settled, but we have learned to reconcile our urge to explore “what lies beyond” with our desire for the comfort that comes from building a space to call “home.” And these powerful human impulses have been driven to new heights by our passion to perfect, taking both transport and architecture on fascinating evolutionary journeys.

The Female Chefs Taking Bahraini Food to the World

Fried safi fish, marinated pieces of beef tikka, and sweet, aromatic chai karak are some of the flavors that ran through my childhood in Bahrain. But if there is one ingredient that’s ubiquitous in the Middle Eastern archipelago, it is black lime—also known as black lemon, or lumee. This has become Bahrain’s unofficial culinary ambassador over the past few years, thanks to a handful of chefs, many of them women, on a mission to introduce the country’s cuisine to the rest of the world.

From Arctic art to the Disgusting Food Museum: Europe’s top 10 culture destinations for 2024

Germany is celebrating the 250th birthday of one of its best-loved painters, the Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840). His work features mountains, ruins and stormy seas, often with human figures, such as Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog. There are exhibitions in Hamburg (until 1 April), Berlin (19 April to 4 August) and Dresden (24 August to 5 January 2025), where Friedrich lived for 40 years; he is buried in the city’s Trinitatis Cemetery. His birthplace, Greifswald, has a festival (31 August-1 September) and three exhibitions at the Pomeranian State Museum (from 28 April). Visitors can also follow in the artist’s footsteps – literally, as he preferred to travel on foot, sketchbook in hand – to locations in his paintings, such as Rügen Island or the Saxon Switzerland national park.germany.travel

My Best Meal Of The Year Is Where You Need To Eat In 2024: Jordnær

Copenhagen is home to some of the world’s most sought after dinner reservations. And while a few have earned three-Michelin stars as well as the title of ‘World’s Best Restaurant’ the most satisfying meal I had in all of 2023 was at Restaurant Jordnær , located a short commuter train ride away from the main city in Gentofte. Chef Eric Vildgaard and his wife and partner Tina Kragh Vildgaard have crafted a tasting menu and dining experience that maintain excitement and satisfaction throughout its many courses — and earned the restaurant two Michelin stars as well as 2023 “Restaurant of the Year” in Denmark by the Danish Dining Guide. I spoke with Chef Vildgaard, along with Tina Kragh Vildgaard, about their shared passion for Jordnær and their vision to provide every guest with a memorable evening.

I Took a Course to Cure My Fear of Flying—Here's What Happened

I used to really like air travel—largely because of a Disney movie from the late seventies called The Rescuers. The leads are mice: a chic one, voiced by Eva Gabor; and a frumpy one, voiced by Bob Newhart. They’re on assignment to save an orphan girl who was abducted for the purpose of retrieving a diamond from the Louisiana bayou—but first they have to get there from New York City, which involves riding in a sardine tin strapped to an albatross. When the bird wings off the roof of a skyscraper at sunset, poor Bob is practically peeing himself. But not Eva. “Oooo! I just luv takeoffs!” she says. “It’s just like being on a rollerscoater.”

Night trains and border crossings: Europe’s best new rail routes

Warsaw has just moved closer to Munich, Berlin nudged towards Paris, and Aachen slipped nearer to Salzburg. These are just three examples of city pairs that are newly linked, as of this week, by direct night trains. None of these city pairs currently has direct daytime trains, so the overnight options create a web of opportunities. As always in December, rail operators across Europe are introducing new schedules, along the way creating tantalising links where none existed before.

Christmas in Copenhagen: a Scandi winter wonderland

To be in Copenhagen in December is to experience truly exhilarating tastes of Christmas. The air is heavy with the scent of caramelised almonds that are sold in red and white striped paper bags, while stalls on the harbourside at Nyhavn are dispensing glögg, mulled wine with almonds and raisins. And there’s Julebryg, Tuborg’s Christmas beer, delivered to bars across Copenhagen by horse-drawn wagons.
