For over 20 years, Melissa Goldstein worked as a magazine photo editor. While researching imagery, she developed a fascination with Scandinavian ceramics, 17th-century botanical illustrations and Japanese woodblock prints dating back to the 1500s. It wasn’t until she moved to Brooklyn and began rehabilitating the overgrown garden behind her brownstone that she began combining her interests: “[My brand MG by Hand] was the merging of my research, the garden and making things for my family,” Goldstein says of the fine English porcelain ceramics she now sells in select shops and online. In 2008, the artist began hand-making everyday dinnerware in her home studio in Carroll Gardens, decorating the pieces with floral motifs in a cobalt stain. Black irises, poppies and flowering quince from her garden adorned vases, shallow banchan dishes and scalloped serving trays. Her new Poppy and Cherry collections, which were fired in a gas kiln for 12 to 15 hours, channel Dutch Delftware while depicting local flora. “I have a wall that separates my garden from my neighbor’s, and I’ve interwoven quince in it,” Goldstein says. “I’m very into blooming trees.”

Filmmaker and director Tommy Joyce is no stranger to the extremes of nature. His work has taken him across the world to camp alone 6,700m up a mountain in Nepal, chart the frozen wilderness of the Antarctic Peninsula and negotiate the dust clouds and intense 49C heat of the Sahara Desert. These are testing places for people and equipment — whether he’s capturing someone at the peak of human endurance or a landscape in just the right sunlight, it’s work that comes with both challenges and rewards.
I spotted Colorado's Flatirons before I caught a glimpse of the St Julien Hotel & Spa, my hotel for the night.
Is the traditional role of state fish and wildlife agencies coming to an end? That is increasingly the question as some of the nation’s most important—and often controversial—issues are no longer being decided by wildlife professionals whose charter it is to manage natural resources for the greater good. Instead, animal welfare groups and others have staked a clear strategy to circumvent state agencies through the referendum process. That is, if you want to ban mountain lion hunting or introduce wolves to a state, you have only to collect signatures from a population generally easy to sway with emotional media campaigns and overwhelm your opponents on election day— poor outcomes for people and wildlife be damned.

In case you spent last weekend in a coma, you missed one of college football’s most abysmal programs rise from the ashes and stun a 20-point favorite on their home turf. The University of Colorado’s upset over last year’s title contender Texas Christian University may have been a surprise to much of the nation (and clearly Vegas oddsmakers), but not to Buffalo fans and alumni.
Indoor climbing gyms have seemingly popped up all over the place. Chicago alone has welcomed many, including Movement Lincoln Park, with 43,000 square-feet of climbing, yoga, and fitness; First Ascent Humboldt Park, with 11,000 square-feet of bouldering terrain, two yoga studios, and climbing classes; and Brooklyn Boulders, located in Chicago’s West Loop, with fitness classes, bouldering, and plenty of rope routes to light your muscles on fire.
