Never underestimate the difficulty of a flat trail over a great distance. After my first five-hour day following the Island Walk, a new 435-mile trail that rings Prince Edward Island, in Canada’s smallest province, I limped into Points East Coastal Inn in bayside St. Peter’s Bay with a blister cooking on my right sole and a paralyzing need to rest barefoot until checkout the next morning.

Bicycling is one of my favorite activities for intimately connecting with the land. And Prince Edward Island (PEI) makes for an ideal cycling destination, one that’s laden with a sense of serenity, with scenic treasures awaiting around many a curve in the road. Pedaling along the coast and the pastoral interior allows you to slowly soak up the best that PEI has to offer, whether it’s pristine beaches backed by red sandstone cliffs; wide swaths of sweet-smelling purple and sometimes pink lupines that bloom each June; solitary white and red lighthouses that presided over a windswept landscape; or quaint coastal villages where you’ll want to stop a while to dig into freshly caught fish and shellfish.

While traveling through Canada a few weeks ago, I was ecstatic to find my flight from Toronto to Saskatoon had arrived 19 minutes early. Having got into the city a bit earlier than expected, I popped into the Remai Modern museum before it closed. A few days later, on the final leg of my jaunt from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, back to Newark Liberty International, via Toronto, the first leg was also 19 minutes early, and the second a whole 22 minutes ahead of schedule.

The natural landscapes and rugged beauty of Ontario make a great road trip destination where you can admire beautiful picturesque coastlines. Canada’s second largest province is packed with hiking trails, waterfalls, crystal clear lakes, rivers, and natural hidden gems. Each of these seaside towns offers something unique with various attractions, dining, accommodations, outdoor activities, and of course the sandy beaches. They are all excellent choices for an end of summer road trip adventure.
