What It's Like To Sail on the First Adult-Only Cruise Line in the US

I’ve been traveling regularly for the past eight years, and never been on a cruise. It was no accident. Either from arrogance or ignorance, I thought I knew exactly who cruising was for: The retired octogenarian looking for an easy, low-excitement vacation surrounded by other octogenarians, and parents with a masochistic urge to be trapped with their kids on a floating hotel for five days. Certainly not my demographic. So when I decided to sail on a Virgin Voyages adult-only cruise from the US, I was breaking character.

In pictures: an introduction to Guinea Bissau

Sitting on the far west coast of Africa , just south of Senegal, Guinea Bissau is a small yet vibrant African nation just beginning to take its place on the tourist map. Years of colonial rule followed by decades of political instability kept this once-Portuguese outpost a secret, known only by dedicated deep-sea fishermen and a handful of NGO workers. But it’s not going to remain a secret for much longer, as Explore begin running trips to Guinea Bissau in November 2016. We sent photographer Diana Jarvis to uncover Guinea Bissau – here are some of her best shots.

12 things you didn't know you could do in Europe

Some sights are touristy for a good reason. They’re the ones you go to Europe to check off: a wobbly gondola on the canals of Venice, or a mandatory Eiffel Tower selfie. So from plastic hammer fights in Portugal, to a night behind bars in an ex-Soviet prison, here are a few things to do in Europe you probably never considered.

A crazy 24 hours in Tokyo

“The city that never sleeps” is a hackneyed phrase uttered about metropolises from London to New York, but the Japanese capital of Tokyo is perhaps the finest embodiment of the cliché. To test this out, Martin Zatko and his friends decided to spend a full 24 hours finding great things to do in Tokyo: a day split three ways, lassoing together the city’s past, present and future.

A guide to Sweden's unforgettable midsummer celebrations

It’s true to say that Sweden offers travellers a genuine smorgasbord of experiences — depending where and when you go. From ogling the awe-inspiring Northern Lights during the depths of winter, to enjoying a magical city break over Christmas, to exploring the great outdoors in spring, Sweden rocks. Arguably though, with its traditional feasts, flower festivities and frog dances — well lubricated by beer and shots of schnapps — summer solstice is the ideal time to explore Sweden through Swedish eyes. There are — essentially — two main places to visit to celebrate the solstice in Sweden — Dalarna, and the Bohuslän coast. Read on for our full guide to Sweden’s unforgettable midsummer celebrations.

Tokyo nightlife: a neighbourhood guide

Until recently, running a club in Japan was a risky business. The fueihō laws, created in 1948, put restrictions on any small venue where patrons were able to “actively seek out pleasure” – including dancing. Though usually these laws weren’t enforced, any club or bar owners caught by police letting their patrons bust a move could face jail time. In 2016 the laws were finally amended, marking a cultural shift in how Japan views its own nightlife. With this in mind here’s our guide to Tokyo nightlife, some of the best places to enjoy a totally legal drink, dance or robot show in Tokyo.
