People-to-People Cuba Tours: Why They’re Better Than Going at It Alone

With the launch of many new direct flights from the U.S. to Cuba, it may seem like the door to the formerly forbidden country is wide open for Americans. Unfortunately, that’s still not quite the case. Right now, you’ll still need to travel under one of the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) 12 categories of travel, the easiest of which is a “people-to-people” Cuba educational tour.

I helped a dad take care of his daughter on a 9-hour flight. I realized people should have more compassion for families.

Recently I sat beside a little girl and her father during a flight from New York City to Lisbon. The experience gave me insight into what it's like managing a child during a flight, from the snacks to the entertainment, to actual physical safety when it comes to turbulence.

‘Only 12 other people have completed it’: cycling the 7,600km European Divide

Last summer I cycled 7,600km (4,722 miles) along a route called the European Divide Trail, which runs through nine countries, all the way from Arctic Norway to the Atlantic coast in Portugal, mostly camping out along the way. The idea was sparked by an article I saw on the internet – on a website called bikepacking.com. I slowly went from thinking, “That looks cool,” to, “I’m going to do it.” It seemed a bit crazy, but somehow a few months later, in June 2022, it was happening! I was heading off for three months – and I’d even persuaded my friend Max to come along for the first three weeks.

How borders are being reopened: the first countries to welcome people back

This week, pictures have emerged of Italians enjoying al-fresco meals in pizzerias, sun-baked Greeks heading to the beach, and hikers taking to the wide-open expanses of the USA’s national parks. This is not business as usual – social-distancing measures and other hygiene regulations are strict – but there’s a thrill in seeing life creep back into cities and towns around the world. Of course, for those of us still under lockdown, it’s bittersweet watching the world resume some semblance of normality (we’re craving our turn), but here at Rough Guides, it’s provided one thing in bucket loads: hope.

Do People Really Cheat More When They Travel?

Does absence make the heart grow fonder or go yonder? Hotel bar trysts are a classic trope for a reason; what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, so the saying goes. Between the adulterous chaos of the White Lotus, Don Draper's string of affairs with flight attendants and acquaintances on work trips, timeless scenes such as Anna Karenina and Vronsky falling in love at a Moscow train station, it's clear that as a culture we are curious about what happens to our relationships when we travel and apart from our partners. But how much of this is merely fantasy? And does traveling someplace new really make it more tempting to stray?
