The U.S. travel industry has made tremendous progress in its recovery from the pandemic. Bookings for hotels, car rentals and tour activities have risen almost 30% from last year for travel between between Memorial Day and Labor Day — numbers that are expected to increase, according to travel organization AAA.

As Hawai’i continues to rebuild from the devastating and deadly wildfires that swept through the western region of Maui, the state’s leadership is encouraging travel to the other islands and even parts of Maui that were not affected by the wildfires. In a news conference this week, Hawaii’s Gov. Josh Green and its tourism board advised travelers that they're still welcome to visit the other islands of Hawaii. “Like we saw in the pandemic, decisions we made can affect everyone across the islands. So what we’re saying now is travel should not be to West Maui. But the other parts of Maui are safe,” Green said at the press event.

After being homebound for much of the last several years, the American public is now quenching its pent-up thirst for travel by taking to the roads and skies in near record numbers. Total travel spending improved to 0.9% above June 2022 levels and was up 4.7% year-to-date through June 2023 according to the U.S. Travel Association. Heading into the busy summer travel season this past June, air traveldemand increased over 11% compared to the same month last year.
