Located in the heart of the Aegean Sea, the picturesque island of Paros has recently captured the hearts of travellers worldwide, thanks to its starring role in the smash hit Netflix drama One Day.

With the release of Dune: Part Two, audiences will return to Arrakis and find it largely unchanged. As in the first film, the desert planet is compiled largely of plots of Earth we know as Jordan’s Wadi Rum and Abu Dhabi. This time around, however, we get to go deeper. Port Talbot recently returned to the spotlight, when Tata Steel announced electrification and layoffs last month and the BBC broadcast Michael Sheen’s television series The Way this week. Port Talbot, however, would seem hard to ignore. As you approach on the M4, which undulates gamely on stilts across the skyline, the view of the vast Tata Steel plant is bracing. The hills on the inland side are squat, solid-looking lumps but greenish and pleasant enough. The sea glints on the far side of the works. You may catch sight of beautiful Aberavon Beach. Whitish steam – and a 50th of the UK’s CO2 emissions – curls up into grey estuarial cloud.

In the 1950s and '60s, "stewardesses were glamorous. They were beautiful. They were poised," says former Delta Air Lines flight attendant Casey Grant at the beginning of a new documentary film about the history of flight attendants.

Oscar-winning filmmaker and artist Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave, Shame, Hunger) shows us in his engrossing new documentary, Occupied City, how the not so distant past events of the second world war still haunt present day Amsterdam. His film, made with his historian wife, Bianca Stigter, evokes the ghosts of the past, felt everywhere in the city, inside buildings where often harrowing things happened but the film also leaves us with the positive reminder that “the Nazis didn’t win.”

Like the allure of vinyl records, classic video games and even the early internet, the fascination with older photography standards like point-and-shoot cameras or 35-millimeter film persists — even in people too young to remember when that gear was cutting edge. The appeal of “vintage” photography goes beyond nostalgia and Instagram filters, judging by the huge number of apps designed to emulate the film, lenses and visual quirks of predigital photos and movies.
