“What was this building before?” is Howard Cushing’s favorite question. That’s because this patrician, shingled white building facing Newport harbor fits in so completely with the other buildings in this Rhode Island town known for its 18th century houses but also for sailing and society socializing. Though Cushing has a history in Newport as a descendant of a prominent family that includes the artist Howard Gardiner Cushing, his great grandfather, the building doesn’t: it’s a new build created by Cushing and partner Wirt Blaffer. But as Gardiner House, a boutique hotel that soft opened in September, it feels immediately in sync with Gilded Age grandeur-just with contemporary style.

For those looking to visit Sicily and experience it in a new way, a good place to start is the Villa Igiea in Palermo. A cherished landmark, the villa is testament to a great Italian dynasty, theFlorios, who were widely chronicled in Europe for both their business acumen and social prowess, as the Astors and Vanderbilts were in the U.S., during the Belle Epoque. Designed in neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau styles, Villa Igiea was purchased by the Florios to be used as a health retreat for an ailing daughter. Instead they turned it into a hotel, which would come to be known for a glittering guest list that included kings and emperors and film-world royalty like Roberto Rossellini and Sophia Loren. In 2019, Rocco Forte Hotels purchased the historic property and initiated a multi-year refurbishment overseen by Olga Polizzi, director of design and deputy chairman of RFH.

From the outside, it may seem like the northern lights dance across Iceland’s skies each night. On Icelandair ads, planes fly across shimmering curtains in the sky. On social media, travelers gaze at the green bands above them. The lights are even on some recycling bins in Reykjavík, the capital: “Keep Iceland Clean.”
No matter how far your cruise roams, staying connected to the internet can be as important for some cruisers as oxygen and water. Whether you're keen on live-streaming penguins from your balcony on an Antarctica cruise, catching up on your favorite TV series or hopping on a Zoom call in the middle of the Pacific, connectivity and high-speed access are now considered essentials when cruising.
The historic Troy Laundry Building — a Colonial Revival-style brick warehouse sitting at 1025 S.E. Pine Street in Portland, Oregon — has begun a new iteration. Constructed in 1913, the Buckman neighborhood building was an industrial laundry facility until 1983, served as an artist co-op for a few decades, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Loud luxury is slowly taking over social media — and when it comes to travel, it seems nothing exudes this concept more than overwater villas or bungalows.
The influencers were not in Aspen to ski. In their Barbie-pink ski suits and matching Moon Boots, they rode the Silver Queen gondola to the top of the mountain, smiling and jumping for their cameras and social media feeds. Soon they would get back on the gondola and ride down, perhaps to pose for more content with a glass of Champagne at Ajax Tavern at the resort base.
If you’ve ever settled in for a long-haul flight and begun watching a movie only to find yourself sobbing after the opening credits, you’re not alone–it’s an occurrence that many travelers have experienced. “I always cry on planes,” says Sarah Allard, Condé Nast Traveler’s UK digital editor. “No matter what kind of headspace I’m in if I’m watching a movie with any sentimental or emotional theme, it’s only a matter of time before the tears start falling. On my last long-haul flight, I watched Aftersun and thought I might die from holding in the sobs.” Amber Port, audience growth manager for Condé Nast Traveller, agrees. “I watched Past Lives in the cinema, and while I was moved, I didn’t cry—but then I rewatched it on the plane and was silently sobbing by the end of it. I’m not sure what changed, but something did.”
