I was in 10th grade, and I was ahead of the trend. My New Balance 574s, ordered with great apprehension from Urban Outfitters and freshly unboxed, were a deep gray suede. The “N” of the brand’s logo, crimson as it was, supplied delicious contrast. Waiting to enter the chemistry lab of my high school’s newly-constructed science wing, I swanned a bit. Sneakers had only recently been incorporated into the dress code, and my peers largely remained in their deflated, untied boat shoes, not ready to step into the future, or donned the same Nikes they’d need for the afternoon’s sports practice (I, on the other hand, did theater after school). I expected praise for, perhaps envy of, my daring. The year is 2015 and yet I am still unprepared for what I receive instead: a gleeful chorus of “What are those?” accompanied by the cruel but requisite air traffic director–esque pointing.

As a former social media editor and now travel editor, I’ll be the first to admit that my dedication to taking aesthetic holiday content often goes too far. On holiday with family Kefalonia earlier this summer, I racked up over 1,500 photos and videos in just one week. On a five-day trip to Tuscany with friends, I returned with just under 1,000. My camera roll is filled with curated restaurant tablescapes, postcard-perfect sunsets and highlight reels of recent trips.

The travel industry has continued to thrive in 2024, with businesses experiencing healthy growth and strong profit margins. However, as the industry evolves, it faces new challenges and opportunities that will shape its future. Traveling as a sober person can be quite challenging at times. No matter how comfortable you are with your sobriety or how long it’s been since your last alcoholic drink, it can still feel like you’re missing out. After all, the whole point of traveling is to soak in as many new experiences as you can and plenty of those experiences seem to involve imbibing. When you’re with other people who seem to be enjoying themselves all the more because of their buzz, it can feel pretty awkward declining to partake. 

If you’re on social media or follow the latest travel trends, it’s likely you’ve seen or heard about an increasingly popular trend of travelers visiting grocery stores during their trip as a way to immerse themselves in local culture, especially in international destinations. 

Dressed in sailor uniforms or cowboy hats or painted in bright pinks, blues and reds, rubber duckies — the kind usually found floating in a toddler’s tub — are now bobbing to faraway places as part of a global scavenger hunt taking over cruise ships.

Picture it: You’re scrolling social media and see a happy couple against a dreamy backdrop celebrating their engagement. You immediately make up a scenario in your head, predicting how surprised the other partner was based on their body language, outfit, and manicure status. On a scale from “absolutely no clue this was happening” to “they helped plan it themselves,” you decide it was somewhere in the “had a hunch but couldn’t confirm” range and wait (not so) patiently for them to share more.

You can’t go too far in travel industry circles without hearing that activities and experiences represent one of the biggest (and often untapped) opportunities for multiple businesses across the industry.
