6 great places to visit by train in Europe

There are few better ways to see Europe than by rail. Budget flights might abound, but nothing can match the experience of travelling by train. Forget about tedious airport transfers and unsociable departure times, by rail you’ll get glorious views, spacious seats and – best of all – the ability to hop off a train right in the centre of a new city.

How Gainsborough Bath Spa Captures The Spirit Of Bath

“The hotel is one of the most unique properties in the whole of the UK, “ says Gainsborough Bath Spa’s general manager, Marc Mac Closkey. The Dublin-born hotel manager is a natural raconteur, but he’s not putting a PR spin on what are the charms of the hotel, carved out of two Grade II listed buildings in the heart of Bath—it is genuinely one-of-a-kind.

These 7 Properties Will Make You Feel Like You're at the Grand Budapest Hotel

With its pastel pink walls and thick red carpets, the design of The Grand Budapest Hotel is immediately recognizable to just about anyone, regardless of whether you’ve seen the film or not (it didn't receive an Academy Award for Best Production Design for no reason.) While you unfortunately can’t stay at the real Grand Budapest Hotel (there isn't one), you can check in to some existing properties that look right out of a Wes Anderson production. These colorful, luxe hotels all stand in the same design spirit as the iconic Grand Budapest.

Poster House: Manhattan’s New Blockbuster Of A Museum

By nature, posters are largely ephemeral items, meant as not much more than quotidian commercial promotions. But very often, in fact, they rise to superb works of art. How gorgeous are those enormous vintage, and now-pricey, advertisements for Dubonnet aperitif or Pernod absinthe. What stunning hand-drawn illustrations promoted mid-century’s glamorous new ski resorts or the chic and exotic destinations that airlines like Air France or Air India promised.

Britain’s ‘Pie King’ Comes to Paris

“They’re movable pieces of art,” says Budapest-born, London-based decorator Gergei Erdei of his new collection of hand-painted folding pinewood screens. Part of his Objects of Desires series, the six designs include trompe l’oeil columns, wing-footed mythological figures and interlinked geometric shapes. Erdei found inspiration for his pieces, which are over seven feet tall, in a recent retrospective of the Italian couturier Elsa Schiaparelli’s works at Paris’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs and in the lacquered screens of multimedia Art Deco creator Jean Dunand; Pompeii’s crumbling frescoes and ancient mosaics informed the mythological design’s soft, ocher hues, which were achieved through multiple coats of acrylic paint. “I keep coming back to Pompeii in my work,” Erdei says. “I find the layers faded by time so beautiful, like veils of history.”

Where Was ‘Dune: Part Two’ Filmed?

With the release of Dune: Part Two, audiences will return to Arrakis and find it largely unchanged. As in the first film, the desert planet is compiled largely of plots of Earth we know as Jordan’s Wadi Rum and Abu Dhabi. This time around, however, we get to go deeper. As Paul Atreides and his mother Lady Jessica (Timothee Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson, respectively) assimilate to life amongst the Indigenous Fremen people, they unlock access to parts of the planet previously unknown to outsiders.

A Black Forest fairytale: riding Germany’s ‘hell valley’ railway in winter

In the tucked away Black Forest town of Donaueschingen, the mighty River Danube begins. It rises as a clear, three metre-deep wellspring in the town centre, encircled by a stone basin sculpted with zodiac symbols. From there, the Danube – Donau in German – flows full tilt onwards for 1,771 miles to its mouth on the Black Sea, passing through the great cities of Vienna, Budapest and Belgrade.

‘I didn’t expect to feel so moved’: readers’ favourite cultural trips in Europe

The spectacular House of Music is in Budapest’s beautiful City Park. After going through the mushroom-like main entrance, you find a museum dedicated to the history of music. From the beginning of music to the modern day via Gregorian chanting and Hungarian folk, the House of Music is a fascinating place. With a superb audio guide, and for just 1,000 forints (£2.25), it is well worth a visit.Danny Baker
