Some analysts aren’t buying the idea that Choice Hotels International is seriously contemplating an acquisition bid for Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, which The Wall Street Journal reported sources saying was a possibility on Tuesday.
India-based budget hotel operator and aggregator Oyo said it will add over 1,000 hotels to support over 100 first-generation hoteliers’ growthby December this year as part of its accelerator program. The company launched the program in March with a target of supporting 50 first-generation hoteliers. Hotel owners with more than five running hotels are eligible to be a part of the program.
Wyndham Hotels & Resorts reported on Thursday that it saw weaker profitability in the second quarter. The operator of hotels with about 851,500 rooms worldwide faced tough year-over-year comparisons. Its portfolio skews toward affordable roadside hotels, which benefited especially strongly in the immediate months of the pandemic easing.
Wyndham Hotels & Resorts said on Tuesday it had signed 60 more hotels for its Echo Suites Extended Stay by Wyndham brand in the U.S. and Canada.
Wyndham and Choice Hotels are two of the largest asset-light franchisors of hotel rooms in the U.S., with nearly 100% of their portfolios under franchise agreements. Both Wyndham and Choice skew to the midscale and economy chain scales, unlike their more upscale peers Hilton, Marriott and IHG.
